Problem to solve

Perform thermalhydraulic tests at high pressure and temeprature with mutiphase fluid (water-steam-air).

Description

SIRIO is a branched natural circulation loop operting at 200 bar and up to 470°C, with 3/4" tubing. A 110kW electrical steam generator is located in the bottom part of the loop. From this starts a riser for ~26m of height. At the top of the riser the loop branches into two descending lines that rejoins approximately 4 m above the steam generators. Both lines can be isolated by means of pneumatic valves placed at the two branching point (top & bottom). Each branch houses a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The first is atwo tubes exchanger of approximately 1.5m length. The second is a single tube of ~0.5m in a large pool.Below the latter is a tee plenum with a line going to a tank for gas. Such line is siolated by means of a pneumatic valve.

Innovative aspects and advantages

  • Can measure precisely the void fraction (loaded water is weighted)
  • Purposefully injects non-condensable gas in a controlled way
  • Works at high temperature and pressure

Admissible applications

  • Characterization of instruments for multiphase flow (water-steam-air)
  • Characterization of the effects of non-condensable gas in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger.
