The strategic research area focuses on simulations and modeling in the field of materials and environmental transport, as well as on the optimization of particle detectors for a wide range of applications, including medical physics, nuclear physics, and high-energy physics.

Problem to solve
Need to develop and optimize numerical models and advanced simulation tools to address complex challenges related to particle and radionuclide transport in different application contexts. In particular, the need concerns improving the accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency of Monte Carlo simulations for the design and characterization of detectors in medical physics, nuclear physics, and high-energy physics, as well as the reliable modeling of radionuclide transport and diffusion processes in the subsurface and the atmosphere. These activities are aimed at supporting predictive analyses, safety assessments, environmental monitoring, and experimental optimization through validated methodologies and high-performance computing tools.
Description
Subsurface radionuclide transport (AMBER and PETRASIM codes): transport and diffusion in liquid and solid phases; - Simulations of atmospheric transport using RODOS and WEBGRAPE; - Simulations using the Geant4 toolkit within the following scientific disciplines: High Energy Physics: CMS Collaboration @ CERN; Nuclear Physics: development of detectors for radioactive waste monitoring; Applied Physics: development of detectors for medical imaging.
