Problem to solve

The dosimetry service aims to address the issue of protecting workers and individuals exposed to ionizing radiation. This service enables continuous monitoring of radiation exposure through the provided dosimeters, preventing health issues such as occupational diseases or long-term effects, and ensuring that corrective measures are promptly implemented in cases of excessive exposure. Essentially, the dosimetry service is designed to safeguard the safety, health, and well-being of operators and individuals in environments at risk of radiation exposure. Potential clients include employers/operators of practices involving external ionizing radiation risks, including nuclear facilities.

Description

The ENEA external dosimetry service provides rental and reading of personal and environmental dosimeters, designed, manufactured, and qualified by ENEA for monitoring external radiation of all types. The service offers six types of dosimeters suitable for measuring Hp(d) (Personal Dose Equivalent) and H(d)* (Ambient Dose Equivalent), along with all the necessary equipment for their processing, including: • Whole-body dosimeter for photons, equipped with two LiF(Mg, Cu, P) detectors. • Whole-body dosimeter for thermal neutrons, featuring two detectors: one LiF(Mg, Cu, P) and one 7LiF(Mg, Cu, P). • Extremity dosimeters for high-energy gamma (?), X-rays, and beta (ß) radiation, based on LiF(Mg, Cu, P) detectors (available in sterilizable ring and bracelet supports). • Extremity dosimeters for medium-energy gamma (?), X-rays, and beta (ß) radiation, based on thin LiF(Mg, Cu, P) detectors (available in sterilizable ring and bracelet supports). • Whole-body dosimeter for fast neutrons, made with CR39®?. • Eye lens dosimeter.

Innovative aspects and advantages

  • compliance with ISO 17025
  • periodic participation in national and international intercomparisons and inter-laboratory comparisons
  • personal and environmental dosimeters designed, manufactured and qualified in ENEA
  • synergy with ENEA calibration center for ionizing radiation
  • twenty years of experience in the sector with participation in national and international working groups

Admissible applications

  • Aerospace and Aviation Sector: Monitoring radiation exposure for aircrew and passengers during high-altitude flights.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Measuring environmental radiation levels in areas surrounding nuclear power plants or other radiation-emitting facilities.
  • Medical Sector: Monitoring radiation doses for healthcare professionals using radiological equipment or working in radiotherapy departments. Tracking patient exposure during diagnostic imaging procedures.
  • Nuclear Industry: Periodic evaluation of radiation doses for employees in nuclear power plants, decommissioning projects, or waste management sites.
  • Occupational Safety: Monitoring radiation exposure for workers in power plants, healthcare facilities, and research laboratories. Ensuring compliance with occupational safety regulations for employees handling radioactive materials.
