Collection of ENEA technology and expertise
IELLLO: flowing lead-lithium facility for characterization of instrumentation and components of liquid Breeding Blanket of fusion reactors.
Application sectors
Problem to solve
Characterizing the performances of prototypical instruments and components.
Description
IELLLO facility is one of the few facilities with flowing high-temperature PbLi currently under operation in Europe and its operative parameters allow to simulate many operational or abnormal transients, while having the possibility to test instrumentation and large components. The facility was designed by ENEA and is in operation since 2015. Since then, it has undergone some modifications, including the adoption of a permanent magnet pump for PbLi circulation and the addition of instrumentation for pressure, flow rate and temperature measurement. These are its main characteristics: • PbLi inventory: 500 liters • Maximum PbLi temperature: 550°C • Minimum PbLi temperature: 300°C • PbLi flow rate: 0-2.5 kg/s • Maximum PbLi pressure: 10 bar in the low-pressure loop, 80 bar in the THALLIUM test section • Maximum test section length: 1900 mm • Piping dimension: 1” and 1”-1/2 • Maximum power managed by the air cooler: 350 kW • Instrumentation: 4 flow meters, 5 differential pressure transducers on the main components, 2 absolute pressure transducers, more than 70 thermocouples (about 10 immersed)
