Problem to solve

Possibility to simulate the radiative environment, under controlled conditions, in which the system of interest is used to verify its resistance, proper functioning, or the effects induced by radiation. This can concern applications in the medical, nuclear, Space, and High Energy Physics experiments. Another relevant issue may be related to the production or modification of materials for specific needs (polymers, food matrices, living organisms). Potential users: national and international industries, public and private users, universities, research bodies, and institutes.

Description

The CALLIOPE Facility is a unique research plant at both national and international levels, as it is equipped with a large irradiation cell that allows conducting tests in very different conditions. The tests are designed according to the specific requests of the Client, thanks to the great experience and competence of the team operating at the facility. The attached Laboratory ensures the accurate determination of irradiation parameters and supports the study of radiation-induced effects.

Innovative aspects and advantages

  • Dosimetric and characterization laboratory
  • Execution of tests in various conditions (environmental, irradiation parameters, acute and chronic modes)
  • Expertise of the team operating at the facility
  • Large dimensions of the irradiation cell

Admissible applications

  • AEROSPACE: • Qualification testing of electronic components under gamma irradiation • Effect of gamma radiation on inorganic and organic matrices • Dosimetric systems
  • AGRO-FOOD: • Use of gamma radiation to remove pathogenic organisms and increase food safety • Irradiation of foods to extend the shelf life and reduce waste • Control of pest insects through irradiation (SIT)
  • CULTURAL HERITAGE: • Treatment with gamma radiation for disinfection and consolidation of materials of interest for Cultural Heritage
  • MATERIALS: • Study of radiation resistance of materials of various types and compositions • Production, modification, and functionalization of materials through gamma radiation
