CALIBRATION CENTRE FOR IONIZING RADIATION
Application sectors
Problem to solve
Ensuring that radiation measuring instruments (personal dosimeters, probes, detectors, environmental monitors, scintillation counters, ionization chambers, etc.) provide reliable and traceable measurements to national/international standards. • Complying with legal requirements and quality standards (ISO 17025, national and international radiation protection regulations) that mandate the periodic calibration of measurement instruments to ensure: • protection of exposed workers, • safeguarding of the population and the environment, • regulatory compliance in the medical, industrial, and research sectors. • Supporting innovation and research by providing high-reliability calibration facilities that are generally not available to individual users.
Description
The Calibration Center has laboratories confined within a single area, consisting of five irradiation rooms and three control rooms, covering a total surface of approximately 300 square meters. It is capable of operating with metrological traceability to reference standards for ionizing radiation (photons, beta, and neutrons). The Ionizing Radiation Calibration Center of the ENEA Institute of Radiation Protection enables the calibration of ionizing radiation detection instruments for radioprotection and/or dosimetry purposes (ionization chambers, proportional counters, Geiger-Muller counters, scintillators, semiconductor detectors, personal dosimeters). Potential users include employers/operators, including those in nuclear plants and/or storage sites, professionals in the fields of environmental monitoring, radioprotection, radiodiagnostics, radiotherapy, health physics services, research institutions, and industrial activities.
